Is Emotionally Focused Therapy Only Good for Marriages on the Brink of Divorce?

As you read websites of couples counselors (even my own), you might find the language speaking towards an audience of couples and marriages that are in a really dire place. You might be feeling like you can't relate. Your relationship isn't stripped of its foundation of trust and security, but there are just some areas you want to adjust, tweak and strengthen.

"If we go to this therapist will they be able to help us, if they seem to work mainly with couples who are at their end?"

"Will this therapist just assume we are at our end too and not really meet us where we are at?"

"Does emotionally focused therapy only really apply to marriages on the brink of Divorce?"

These are some common questions I have heard from couples who just want to take preventative measures, or are looking to just iron out some areas of their relationship, and don't find themselves at the end of their rope with one another.

I fell in love with emotionally focused therapy, because it provides the flexibility to meet each couple where they are at. You're relationship does not need to be in severe distress to utilize the benefits of emotionally focused therapy. Utilizing emotionally focused therapy when a relationship is looking to deepen bonds already there and smooth out some kinks in communication is a great way to deepen connection and fortify the security you already have beautifully established together. I would highly recommend couples to proactively utilize emotionally focused therapy before their relationship even has an opportunity to get to a place of worst case scenario.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is not just for relationships healing after infidelity, relationships that are trying to recover from years of hurt and resentment, relationships that are highly volatile, and relationships that are considering divorce.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is just as much for the relationships in the honeymoon phase, relationships that are hitting a minor bump in the road, and relationships that just want to deepen and build on the beautiful safety that already exists.

The beauty of Emotionally Focused Therapy is that it is anchored in meeting each couple and individual exactly where they are at and growing from that place together. Your relationship doesn't have to come in with a prerequisite of being in complete turmoil in order to be seen and supported.

Emotionally Focused Therapy aims to meet you where you are and can help you grow with the strengths your relationship already carries.
